"Donkey space" is a term used to describe humans inferring the type of opponent they're playing against, and planning to outplay them. However the opponent is also inferring the player's nature, so the two maneuver around each other in the figurative space, trying to narrow down the other's position and take advantage. Think of the 'iocane powder' scene from The Princess Bride.
